It is little lines like this that reveal Anne’s horrid past and unaccountable joyful, persevering demeanor. If we don’t catch it here, Marilla fills it in a few lines later in her thoughts: “What a starved, unloved life she had had … .” p. 50. And yet she also had an optimistic spirit to see her through because beyond the “starved, unloved life,” she had the knowledge of a beautiful world and the possession of an imagination.
